Bhutan’s newest princess named – Royal Central

Bhutan’s royal family has revealed the name of their newest princess with several photographs to debut the newborn.

The only daughter of King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema has been named Sonam Yangden Wangchuck. She shares her name with her paternal aunt, Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck and paternal grandmother, Queen Tshering Yangdon.

Sonam denotes merit, longevity and good fortune. Yangden means precious jewel, which signifies prosperity and well-being.

Princess Sonam’s name was unveiled in an official naming ceremony at Tashichhodzong on the anniversary of her father’s ascension to the throne in 2006. His Holiness the Je Khenpo presided over the ceremony.

Various members of the Bhutanese Royal Family were in attendance including the proud parents, King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema. The Princess’s brothers also attended, as did her paternal grandfather, King Jigme Singye. Her paternal grandmother, Queen Mother Tshering Yangdon, and the other Queen Mothers also appeared.

The Dzongdas, Thrizins, and Lam Netens of twenty dzongkhags made buelwa offerings in representation of the people of Bhutan. Representatives of the Dratshang offered Ku Sung Thugten Mendrel, according to the Royal Office for Media.

The Gyalsem (the Princess in English) was born on 9th September 2023 at Lingkana Palace in Thimpu. She has two older brothers, Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel (7) and Prince Ugyen Wangchuck (3). The Princess is third in the line of succession to the Bhutanese throne.
