Greek Monarchy Centenary Celebrations, 1963


Royal from around Europe joined the Greek Royal Family to celebrate the Centenary of the Greek Monarchy on this day in 1963, marking the 100th Anniversary of the Accession of the Danish Prince who became King George I of Greece, and the 50th Anniversary of his Assassination, just a few weeks after King Paul and Queen Frederica’s Silver Wedding Anniversary and the Engagement of Crown Prince Constantine of Greece and Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark.

The celebrations began with a Banquet hosted by King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece (wearing the Greek Emerald Parure) at the Royal Palace of Athens, at which the guests of honour were King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark (in Queen Sophie’s Diamond Tiara, after the Pearl Poiré Tiara was lost).

They were followed by Crown Prince Constantine of Greece and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark, Crown Princess Margarethe of Denmark (wearing the Alexandrine Drop Tiara), Crown Prince Harald of Norway, Princess Irene of Greece (in the Pearl Necklace Tiara), Princess Sofia of Spain (wearing the Mellerio Shell Tiara and Niarchos Ruby Parure), Princess Benedikte of Denmark (wearing her Floral Tiara), Prince Michael of Greece,

Extended members of the Greek Royal Family included Princess Paul of Yugoslavia (in the Diamond Kokoshnik Tiara), Princess Irene, Duchess of Aosta (wearing her Diamond Tiara), Princess Andrew of Greece, the Margrave and Margravine of Baden (in the Baden Sunburst Tiara), Princess Margarita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (in the Bolin Ruby Tiara), and Princess Sophie of Hannover (wearing the Emerald Laurel Wreath Tiara).

In the evening, Royal Relatives joined King Paul and Queen Frederica (wearing the Greek Ruby Parure) for a Gala Performance at the Royal Theatre in Athens, followed by a Gala Dinner, where they were joined by King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark (in the Danish Ruby Parure) and Queen Helen of Romania (wearing the Romanian Greek Key Tiara) in the front row.
