A right royal night at the BAFTAs sees Paddington lead tributes to Queen Elizabeth II again – Royal Central

The time that Queen Elizabeth II took tea with Paddington Bear has been named the most memorable TV moment of 2022 at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The Platinum Jubilee special won a TV BAFTA after topping a public vote to find out the stand out segment of the year.

The two minute sketch, which began the Platinum Party during the Jubilee in June 2022, topped the poll for Most Memorable Moment with the coveted prize collected by, among others, Ben Wishaw, who voiced Paddington during the scene and Simon Farnaby, who played Her Late Majesty’s butler.

Picking up the BAFTA, Simon Farnaby said ”the person who really deserves this award is no longer with us to receive it….we can only accept it on her behalf and say ”thank you Ma’am – for everything.”

And those words were an echo of the famous end to the scene which saw Paddington say those words on behalf of the nation.

The little bear himself was seen as the award was presented, lifting his hat in recognition.

The sketch famously saw Queen Elizabeth II reveal that she kept marmalade sandwiches in her handbag, which she told Paddington were ”for later”.

In September 2022, following Her Late Majesty’s death, packets of marmalade sandwiches became a popular tribute to her, left among the flowers with notes reading ”for later”.

There was also a BAFTA win for King Charles III. A special edition of The Repair Shop, presented by Jay Blades, and featuring His Majesty was named best daytime programme.

The BAFTAs recognise excellence in TV across the year.
