The Queen

Queen Margrethe II, full name Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid, became Queen of Denmark in 1972.

The royal, who was born on April 16, 1940, is the daughter of Frederik IX, who died in 1972, and Queen Ingrid, born Princess of Sweden, who died in 2000.

She became Europe’s longest-serving head of state and the world’s longest-serving female head of state upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

The Queen has two sons, Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, with her late husband, Prince Henrik.

The Crown Prince Frederik

Frederik André Henrik Christian, Prince of Denmark, Crown Prince, Count of Monpezat, is the eldest son of Queen Margrethe II and the late Prince Henrik of Denmark.

He was born on May 26, 1968, and is in line to succeed the Danish throne.

The prince married Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark, born Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, in 2004.

The couple met at a pub in Sydney, Australia, when the Crown Prince was visiting the continent during the 2000 Olympics.

Mary was working at a marketing firm at the time.

Frederik and Mary have four children; Christian, Isabella, Vincent and Josephine.

Prince Joachim

Prince Joachim of Denmark is the second son of Queen Margrethe II and the late Prince Henrik of Denmark.

He is sixth in the line of succession to the Danish throne, following his older brother, Crown Prince Frederik, and Frederik and Mary’s four children.

Prince Joachim was born on June 7, 1969, and, like his brother, he has four children.

The royal shares sons Count Nikola and Count Felix with his ex-wife Alexandra Christina Manley, who he divorced in 2005.

He also has a son, Count Henrik, and daughter, Countess Athena, who he shares with second wife Marie Cavallier. The couple married in 2007.

In 2022, the Queen took the controversial decision to strip Prince Joachim’s children of their royal titles.

She said the move was to allow her grandchildren to live normal lives without royal obligations.

Princess Benedikte

Prince Benedikte, born on April 29, 1944, is the younger sister of Queen Margrethe II.

She is included in the order of succession to the Danish throne and may act as regent when the Queen and Crown Prince are abroad.
