Zara Tindall’s £1m decision proves she’s ‘determined to stand on her own two feet’ | Royal | News

Zara Tindall took a decision before marrying Mike Tindall which suggests she is determined to stand on her own feet financially. Unlike her brother, Peter Phillips, Mrs Tindall and her husband turned down selling rights for her wedding in 2011.

The Olympic equestrian and former rugby player married at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh on July 30, 2011.

Peter and his now ex-wife Autumn Kelly pocketed £500,000 for a 20 page spread in Hello! magazine of their big day in 2008.

Although their nuptials were less high profile than other royals’ weddings, thousands still turned out to wish the couple well as they tied the knot at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in front of the late Queen, Prince Philip, King Charles, Queen Camilla and others.

The Evening Standard reported that a senior royal source said at the time that Hello!’s half a million had not gone down well.

They said: “Peter has always managed to stay out of the limelight by claiming that he is a private person. This rides a coach and horses through that.”

According to the Mail, the Tindalls waived a £1million fee for their wedding and had planned to contribute to the cost. A source said at the time that this was in part due to Zara’s “fierce determination to stand on her own two feet”.

It has been reported that the rest of the wedding was paid for by Zara’s parents, Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, as well as the late Queen Elizabeth II. Taxpayers covered the cost of security.

It emerged this week that Mr Phillips had split from his girlfriend, Lindsay Wallace. He and Ms Kelly divorced in 2021.

The Sun first reported that the relationship between Peter and Lindsay had run its course, with clashes in schedules and commitments believed to be at the heart of the split.

A source told the publication: “They were friends before their relationship blossomed. But Peter and Lindsay have gone their separate ways as the relationship simply ran its course.”

Mr Phillips and Ms Wallace reportedly renewed their acquaintance at a reunion in 2019. They first met as Zara and Ms Wallace attended £45,000-a-year Gordonstoun School in Scotland.

Despite not selling her wedding rights, Zara reportedly did invite Hello! inside her home in 2002 for a £125,000 fee.
