Wedding of Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden and Norway and Princess Joséphine of Leuchtenberg


The Wedding of Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden and Norway, the only son of King Karl XIV Johan and Queen Desideria of Sweden, and Princess Joséphine of Leuchtenberg, daughter of the Duke of Leuchtenberg and Princess Augusta of Bavaria and a granddaughter of Empress Joséphine, at the Storkyrkan in Stockholm on this day in 1823, 200 years ago, following a Proxy Wedding at the Palais Leuchtenberg in Munich held on May 22nd. The couple had five children, including the future King Karl XV and King Oscar II of Sweden.

The future Queen Josefina brought some incredible wedding gifts, including the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure, the Cameo Parure, and likely her Diamond Tiara and Diamond Stomacher, while though inheritance her collection later included the Danish Ruby Parure, Queen Désirée’s Ears of Wheat Tiara, the Napoleonic Emerald Parure and the Braganza Tiara among other spectacular Heirlooms that form the basis of the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian Royal Collections.
