Prince William and Princess Kate “were instrumental” in building up Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, claims a former BBC royal correspondent.

The Duke of Sussex, who is credited as the founder of the Games, is currently in the UK for a special ceremony to mark its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, May 8.

Harry – who flew into Heathrow Airport earlier today – is set to give a speech at the ceremony, which will take place at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Speaking of the Games, former BBC royal correspondent Michael Cole claimed that, although Harry was the founder, Kate and William played a major part in getting the Games “off the ground”.

He told Talk TV: “I looked at the Buckingham Palace website about the Invictus Games and it says that Prince Harry directed the charity.

“But it says that the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are now of course the Prince and Princess of Wales, delivered the Games in partnership with the Ministry of Defence so that means Kate and William were instrumental in helping Prince Harry get this off the ground.”

He added: “That’s worth saying because, of course, he’s not speaking to his brother with whom he was so close.

“[and] Kate, he didn’t go out of his way to wish her well even when, personally, when she delivered the news and did it extremely well and in a most dignified way…”

Praising Harry, he added “everything good he’s done” was before he met Meghan, including the Invictus Games and setting up the Sentebale charity.

Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games back in 2014 in London, with the first Games held that September.

Upon launching the Games, Harry said: “I have witnessed first-hand how the power of sport can positively impact the lives of wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women in their journey of recovery.”

According to GB News, “no members of the Royal Family” are expected to attend the event on May 8.

Speaking previously to the show, Mr Cole said that William and Kate would “not be attending” and that Harry would be flying solo with wife Meghan.

Harry arrived in London earlier today and is understood to have travelled on a 10-hour flight from Los Angeles to London.

Meghan, although previously tipped to join her husband, has remained in the US with the couple’s children – Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, who will turn three next month.

The mother-of-two will, instead, join Harry in Nigeria in the coming days for further Invictus Games commitments.
