The Princess of Wales has praised young people for talking about mental health and called for more to be done to offer support for the issues that are raised.

The Princess was speaking as she visited a Youth Forum in Birmingham with the Prince of Wales. Catherine chose a bright yellow jacket for the event – yellow is the chosen colour for World Mental Health Day with children around the UK wearing it to school that day to mark the event as they talked about their emotional wellbeing.

The meeting was hosted by their Royal Foundation along with BBC Radio 1 and The Mix. The young people involved had all been nominated to take part by ten leading mental health and youth charities.

The Princess told them ”to see young people, like you all here today, leading this charge—being particularly brave in having some of those conversations yourself.”

She added: “As a generation, you value and talk more about your mental health than any before you—something we truly admire and applaud.”

“Simply talking about mental health is just not enough,” Catherine said. “Because although many more conversations are now taking place, it is now vital we spend more time focusing on how we talk about our mental health—and crucially; what are we going to do, to build positive, preventative solutions to one of today’s toughest challenges.”

Their engagement in Birmingham is just the beginning for the royal couple, who will carry out further engagements this week of to mark World Mental Health Week.

It comes as research carried out for their Royal Foundation discovered that 40% of young people think they don’t manage their emotions well.
