The sixth season of The Crown will be available for streaming next month but Netflix’s royal drama has come under fire for its portrayal of Princess Diana’s ghost.
The final series will be released in two parts with the first set to premiere on November 16. It will focus on the events leading up to the late Princess of Wales’ fatal car crash in Paris in August 1997 and the immediate aftermath.
The decision to dramatise Diana’s tragic death in the show has prompted criticism but makers of The Crown have insisted it will be depicted “delicately”.
The show’s creator Peter Morgan has defended the scenes, which do not show the actual crash. He said her posthumous appearance was not meant to be supernatural.
He told Variety: “I never imagined it as Diana’s ‘ghost’ in the traditional sense. It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind. Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively.”

Prince William is unlikely to watch the series with a friend of his telling The Daily Beast recently: “It’s incredibly hurtful to have his mother exploited over and over again in this tawdry fashion by Netflix. He won’t watch it, but he will be totally sickened by it.”
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams has also criticised the show for portraying recent events. He told Express.co.uk: “It was never tasteful to bring The Crown so close to the present day, especially as this meant covering the period of Diana’s death and the public reaction to it.
“It was always going to be extremely controversial and very hurtful to those close to her, especially Princes William and Harry.”
The second part of the final series is due to be released on December 14 and will play out the events of the early 2000s.
It will show the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the marriage between Charles and Camilla as well as William and Kate meeting at St Andrews University.
