The Royal Maundy service will be held in Durham Cathedral for the first time in nearly half a century.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will attend the ceremony which will see the Monarch continue the tradition of distributing Maundy coins to people who have served their community.

The last time the Maundy service was held at Durham was in 1967.

Royal Maundy services go back to the Middle Ages when the Monarch used to wash the feet of the poor and disadvantaged, just as Jesus washed the feet of the disciples on the night of the Last Supper. Alms were also distributed at the ceremony.

The service always takes place on Maundy Thursday, just three days before Easter. King Charles will present two purses of specially minted coins to 76 men and 76 women who have given outstanding support to their local communities. The number of people who receive the coins always matches the age of the Monarch.

Each will be given a red purse, containing a small amount of coins to symbolise a royal gift of food and clothing. A white purse is also presented – this holds special Maundy coins which match, in value, the years of the Monarch’s age.

In 2024, King Charles was unable to attend the Maundy service as his doctors wanted to limit public facing engagements as he began his cancer treatment. Queen Camilla distributed the Maundy money on his behalf at the ceremony which was held at Worcester Cathedral.

The first Maundy service of the reign of King Charles III was held in York.

Queen Elizabeth II decided early on in her reign that the traditional service should be held around the country. Previously, it usually took place in London.

The Dean of Durham, the Very Reverend Dr Philip Plyming, said ”we are both honoured and delighted that The King and Queen are coming to Durham for this year’s Royal Maundy Service.  All of us at Durham Cathedral look forward to welcoming them and being part of this special celebration of volunteering in the local community.”

This year’s Royal Maundy service takes place on April 17th.
