Meghan Markle’s life story in her and Prince Harry’s bombshell docuseries on Netflix, Harry & Meghan, was a catalyst in the couple being invited to Colombia, according to the country’s vice president.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, after the invitation of Francia Márquez, arrived in Colombia on Thursday on their first visit to the South American country, to promote mental health for young people and highlight ways to combat cyberbullying.

Harry and Meghan attended a series of events on Day 1 and Day 2 of their quasi-royal tour including a theatre performance in Bogota, a school visit in the town of Santa Fe and a visit to an inclusive rehabilitation centre for veterans.

During a press conference on the first day of the tour, Ms Márquez, the first black woman in the country to hold the position of vice president, opened up about the reason behind the couple’s invitation.

She said: “How did I get to know Meghan and Harry? I first encountered them through the media, and I particularly watched the Netflix series about their lives and their story, which deeply moved me. It motivated me to say, ‘This is a woman who deserves to visit our country and share her story,’ and undoubtedly, her visit will strengthen so many women around the world.”
