With the news that King Charles III has been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer following treatment for an enlarged prostate late last month, we’ve put together a timeline of events over the past month.

On 17 January, Buckingham Palace releases a short statement announcing that King Charles will undergo treatment for an enlarged prostate.

The statement read: “In common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate. His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure. The King’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation.”

The King’s announcement caused a spike on the National Health Service’s enlarged prostate page, which saw 16,410 visits compared to 1,414 the day before. This averaged out to one page visit every five seconds. The Prostate Cancer UK website also noticed a spike in views on the risk checker tool: 2,754 people visited the page compared to 1,703 the week prior.

King Charles was said to be “keen to share the details of his diagnosis to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked, in line with public health advice.”

Buckingham Palace shared that he would seek treatment soon for his condition and that he would not require Counsellors of State during the procedure.

The King’s announcement came hours after Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales had successfully undergone an undisclosed abdominal surgery.

On 26 January, King Charles was admitted to The London Clinic for treatment. Catherine was also at the same hospital recovering from her surgery.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace shares that the King “would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week and is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness.”

During the King’s three-day stay in hospital, Queen Camilla is constantly visiting him. Outside the London Clinic, she tells the crowds that her husband is doing well.

On 29 January, King Charles is discharged from The London Clinic, with Buckingham Palace sharing that he would like “to thank the medical team and all those involved in supporting his hospital visit, and is grateful for all the kind messages he has received in recent days.”

The King heads to Sandringham to begin a period of recuperation, with public engagements being rescheduled.

Catherine is released from The London Clinic on 29 January as well, though she leaves from a back exit while the King leaves from the front doors.

On 5 February, Buckingham Palace shares a new update, announcing that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer after his medical team noticed a separate health issue.

The statement reads, in full: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

The King will continue with state and official duties but will forgo public engagements during his outpatient treatment for the unnamed form of cancer. There are also no plans to invoke the need for Counsellors of State, though it’s reported that the Prince of Wales may step in on the King’s behalf as needed.

The Royal Family was personally notified by King Charles before his diagnosis was made public; the Duke of Sussex announced through a spokesperson that he will return to the United Kingdom in the coming days to visit his father.

The King returned to London on Monday to begin his outpatient treatment, with Queen Camilla at his side. It is reported that the Queen will continue with a full schedule of duties in the King’s absence.
