Queen Silvia of Sweden surprised the Swedish Designer and Drag Queen, Christer Lindarw at the Oscarsteatern in Stockholm, marking almost five decades of Lindarw’s iconic acts as Queen Silvia.
In a way, the roles are reversed. In 1977, Christer Lindarw impersonated the Queen for the first time. And it was on the exact same stage, the Oscarsteatern in Stockholm.
After his performance, Lindarw handed a rose to the Queen, who was sitting with King Carl Gustaf in the royal box. And she stood up and accepted the rose.
It was very important and significant for Christer and for the whole of After Dark. If the royal family accepted the drag show phenomenon, it sent a signal to the entire Swedish people, says Renée Nyberg, host of “Vilket liv!”
Almost 50 years later, the Queen and Christer Lindarw are reunited at the Oscarsteatern. Silvia enters the stage with regalia and in the same yellow dress that Lindarw wore in 1977.
It’s really a nice gesture from her. She gives a speech to Christer in which she thanks him for everything he has done. It’s obvious that she’s been amused by his interpretations over the years.
Queen Silvia wore the Napoleonic Cut Steel Tiara.
Queen Silvia wore her iconic Dior chiffon gown, which was notably worn for the Nobel Prize Ceremony in 1976 and the Swedish State Visit to The Netherlands in 1976, two of Queen Silvia’s earliest Gala appearances, which was the first gown also worn by Christer Lindarw in 1977.
The Swedish Designer, Entertainer, and Drag Queen, Christer Lindarw has impersonated Queen Silvia for almost 50 years, most notably at Crown Princess Victoria’s 40th Birthday Concert in Öland in 2017.
