Queen Margrethe II of Denmark was invested into the Order of the Garter, joined the British Royal Family at Ascot and received an honorary degree from the University of London during her visit to the United Kingdom on this day in 1980, 45 years ago!
After receiving the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior British Honour, during the British State Visit to Denmark in 1979, Queen Margrethe joined the British Royal Family for the Order of Garter Service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
The following day, Queen Margrethe joined the British Royal Family for Royal Ascot, alongside Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte of Luxembourg.
Queen Margrethe (wearing Princess Alexia’s Diamond Tiara ) also received an honorary degree from the University of London, which as bestowed by the Queen Mother (in the Greville Tiara).

Queen Margrethe next joined the British Royal Family for the Order of the Garter Service at Windsor Castle in 2002, during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations.
