It was a cheeky yet loving moment between Queen Margrethe and Crown Princess Mary outside the Folketing on Tuesday morning when a troublesome hat gave the Danish queen pause.

Tuesday was the annual Folketing, or Parliament Opening, in English, which is attended by members of the Danish Royal Family every year. Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary and Princess Benedikte attended this year.

As the last to arrive outside Folketingsalen at Christiansborg, Queen Margrethe took a moment to greet her family. When it came time to give a quick kiss to her daughter-in-law, Queen Margrethe found she couldn’t reach her due to the wide-brimmed hat she was sporting.

Instead, Queen Margrethe touched her own cheek, then Mary’s, and gave an air kiss before moving on to greet Princess Benedikte.

The moment quickly went viral online, with Billed Bladet, a Danish royal tabloid writing, “Well saved, Queen Margrethe,” on its website.

The Danish Royal Family always attends Folketing, though Queen Margrethe does not give a speech from the throne like her counterparts in the United Kingdom or the Netherlands. Instead, the Danish royals sit in the gallery and listen as the Danish Prime Minister, who is currently Mette Frederiksen, outlines the government’s plans for the year.
