Meghan Markle has been criticized for using her Duchess of Sussex title while lobbying US senators on the issue of parental leave as the former actress has seen her political ambitions sidelined.

Reports this week suggested Meghan could be in line to replace Democrat Dianne Feinstein in the Senate after she died aged 90.

Laphonza Butler – president of the political action committee EMILY’s List – has been selected to replace Ms Feinstein.

Amid the speculation around Meghan’s political ambitions, Professor Pauline Maclaran hit out at the Duchess for previously using her royal title to pressure politicians on issues she is passionate about.

As quoted by GB News, she said: “When she was lobbying for parental leave she used her Duchess of Sussex title and I don’t think that was an appropriate move.

“To me that indicates she doesn’t quite know where she is. She wants to use that title as a status symbol but, for a political route in the US, using a title is really rather ridiculous.

“It shows she wants to keep a foot in both camps. She could have said she was co-founder of Archewell or an actress. The royal title still seems to contribute to her sense of self and identity.”

“I think it shows she hasn’t got a clear direction.”

Meghan wrote her letter to US Senators back in 2021. She spoke about her own financial struggles in the past as she called for paid leave.

She said: “Over the past 20 months, the pandemic has exposed long-existing fault lines in our communities. At an alarming rate, millions of women dropped out of the workforce, staying home with their kids as schools and daycares were closed, and looking after loved ones full-time.

“The working mom or parent is facing the conflict of being present or being paid. The sacrifice of either comes at a great cost.

“I worked all my life and saved when and where I could – but even that was a luxury – because usually it was about making ends meet and having enough to pay my rent and put gas in my car.

“No family should be faced with these decisions. No family should have to choose between earning a living and having the freedom to take care of their child. Many of our economic systems are past their expiration date.”

A Democrat donor told the Daily Mail that Meghan entering politics may be a “long shot” but it is not impossible.

They said: “Meghan is definitely a long shot but in the craziness that is US politics these days it’s not an impossibility.”

The donor added: “Crazier things have happened.”

However, royal commentator Angela Levin has told Sky News Australia that Meghan could not be a politician because she is too “thin-skinned”.

She said: “Meghan Markle could never really be a politician. She’s got very, very thin skin, and she also would have to lose her titles as I believe Harry would as well.”
