A recently unearthed letter from Queen Elizabeth to midwife Sister Helen Rowe, dated August 5 1964, details the mother of four’s feelings about her youngest son, Prince Edward.

The two-page correspondence was written five months after Edward’s birth on March 10 1964, with the then-38 year old Queen describing her baby boy as “good as gold” and added that he “makes everyone happy”.

Sister Helen was on hand to deliver all four of Elizabeth’s children, with the letter regarding Edward now set to be sold on October 28 at the Eppli auction house in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany.

Edward and his brothers King Charles and Prince Andrew were all born at Buckingham Palace, whereas their sister Princess Anne was born at Clarence House.

The handwritten letter was addressed to ‘Rowie’, as the Sister was affectionately nicknamed, who died just two years after Edward was born.

Queen Elizabeth wrote in her letter: “Dear Rowie, I am terribly sorry we never got in touch with you before you left London.

“Mabel was ill in bed when you wrote, and I confess I misread your letter in a great hurry and remembered the wrong day you put down, and when I was away at Arundel last week, I suddenly was reminded of your letter and of course it was too late by then!

“The baby is wonderful – good as gold, trying to sit up and weighing 15 lbs 12! He smiles and gurgles at everyone, and makes everyone happy!

“Charles, I’m thankful to say, is better but very frail as yet. I hope we see you when we return in October. Yours sincerely Elizabeth R.”
