Princess Marie of Liechtenstein’s Sapphire Necklace Tiara

Today marks the 85th Anniversary of the Birth of the late Princess Marie of Liechtenstein, who was born on this day in 1940! The exiled Czech Countess who became the Princess Consort of the wealthy Alpine Principality, Princess Marie wore few jewels, which included this striking Sapphire Necklace Tiara!

When Countess Marie Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau married Hereditary Prince Hans Adam of Liechtenstein in 1967, the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein gave this convertible Sapphire and Diamond Necklace as a Wedding Gift to their future Princess.

Countess Marie Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau first wore the Sapphire Necklace Tiara for the Ball at Schloss Vaduz in July 1967, held on the eve of her Wedding to Hereditary Prince Hans Adam of Liechtenstein.

Shortly after the wedding, Hereditary Princess Marie wore the Sapphire Necklace Tiara for a Gala Dinner in New York, which was its most prominent appearance.

Princess Marie was not someone who frequently wore jewels and was only ever seen wearing one other Tiara, the Kinsky Tiara at the Wedding Ball of her elder son, Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein, and Duchess Sophie in Bavaria at Schloss Nymphenburg in 1993.

After Princess Marie’s death in 2021, the fate of the Sapphire Necklace Tiara remains unknown, but lets hope it reappears during the Wedding Celebrations of her granddaughter, Princess Marie Caroline of Liechtenstein, this summer!
