Happy Birthday to Princess Marie of Denmark, who turns 49 today! The French daughter-in-law of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark was given some heirloom jewels, like Princess Dagmar’s Diamond Floral Tiara and Queen Alexandrine’s Sapphire Brooch upon her marriage, but has also amassed a collection of modern jewels, like this Flora Danica Tiara!

Composed of a base of 25 cabochon amethysts, Princess Marie’s favourite stone, surmounted by three silver lilies tipped with small diamonds, which represent the Princess, her husband and their son then then Prince Henrik, the Tiara was created in 2011 by Anja Blinkenberg for the Danish jewelry house Flora Danica, in collaboration with Princess Marie, who released this statement:

“Once upon a time there was a lily. It was a beautiful flower that grew on the slopes of the French mountains. It swayed gently in the summer breeze and let the dew dance on its tender petals. One day, a young Danish prince passed by the lovely flower, plucked it and took it with him to his kingdom. An adventure was born.”

Princess Marie was presented the Amethyst Lily Tiara on a visit to Flora Danica in August 2011, when it was revealed that Princess Marie has exclusive rights to wear the Tiara but it is still owned by Flora Danica.

Princess Marie has only worn the Flora Danica Tiara once in public, for a Banquet and Ball at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen in March 2014, though let’s hope it makes another appearance soon!
