A royal prince living in America has revealed he is considering returning home after being away from his extended family. Prince Joachim of Denmark is a defence attache at the Danish Embassy in Washington DC.
“We have a desire to come home,” the royal told Denmark’s TV2. “We also do not rule out the possibility of staying abroad. Now we have to see. For now, it is on our radar, when the post here stops, we will return home.” Prince Joachim’s posting in Washington is due to last three years with a possible extension in 2026 when this expires.
Before this, the prince served as a military attache at the Royal Danish Embassy in Paris for four years from 2019. He moves with his wife, Princess Marie, and their children.
He said that though his children, Count Henrik (16) and Countess Athena (13), have an “ever-growing social circle”, he admits to feeling homesick.
“Overall, we can all feel it, and we can also feel it in the children, that it is at home in Denmark that we have our largest social base,” he said.
Earlier this year, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie attended the Invictus Games in Canada, also attended by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Princess Marie has been in Copenhagen this week for engagements with her charities and patronages, including with organisations JunkFood and Hjernesagen.
The family returning to Denmark could provide additional support for King Frederik and Queen Mary particularly following Queen Margrethe’s abdication at the start of last year.
