Marchioness of Cambridge’s Star Tiara

Today marks the 125th Anniversary of the Birth of the Marchioness of Cambridge, who passed away on this day in 1899! The Earl’s daughter who married a former Prince and Queen Mary’s nephew, the Marchioness possessed this striking Diamond Star and Pearl Tiara!

When Lady Margaret Grosvenor, daughter of the 1st Duke of Westminster and Lady Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower, married Prince Adolphus of Teck, eldest son of the Duke of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, she received several spectacular Jewels, including this Diamond Star Tiara from Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, the Duchess of Teck and the future Queen Mary, the sister-in-law of the bride.

The last Duchess of Teck, later 1st Marchioness of Cambridge, wore her Diamond Star Tiara for a portrait taken soon after her marriage, which was spotted several decades later in Queen Mary’s Boudoir.

The Duchess of Teck was usually photographed wearing the Teck Crescent Tiara and the Teck Diamond Hoop Necklace before it was acquired by Queen Mary at some point by the early 1920s, but appears to have worn her Diamond Star Tiara as a corsage for a portrait in the early 1910s.

After the 1st Marchioness’ passing in 1929, the Diamond Star Tiara was among the jewels inherited by her daughter-in-law, the 2nd Marchioness of Cambridge, who wore the Diamond Tiara, which now also included Pearls, with the Diamond Sunburst for the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey in 1937.

The Marchioness of Cambridge also wore the Diamond Star and Pearl Tiara with the Diamond Sunburst and Queen Charlotte’s Pearls for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in 1953.

The Marchioness of Cambridge wore the Diamond Star and Pearl Tiara for a portrait taken at some point in the 1950s, as well as for a handful of occasions during the 1950s (mostly spotted by the wonderful Beth), among them the Coronation Gala at Covent Garden in 1953.

Lady Cambridge passed away in 1988, after which the Diamond Star Tiara would have been inherited by her daughter, Lady Mary Whitley, who herself passed away in 1999. The current location of her jewels is unknown!
