In what could be seen as a major snub to Prince Harry, David Beckham has described his loyalty to Harry’s older brother, Prince William, as he attends the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Taking part in a candid interview, the ex-England captain gave a rare insight into his relationship with the Royal Family and particularly the Prince of Wales.
Describing how he would instantly help William whenever he could, he said: “Whenever the Prince of Wales sends me a message and says ‘I need you to do this’ or ‘be there’, it’s always a ‘yes’.”
The father of four described how he previously helped support causes alongside William – such as veteran welfare or fundraising efforts to secure two new helicopters for London’s Air Ambulance Charity.
David continued: “Over the years, I’ve done a lot with the Prince of Wales, and I’ve always been there whenever he’s asked me to get involved with things.”
Describing his efforts to help the London’s Air Ambulance charity, the football legend said: “These are the things that when I was a kid, I used to see the helicopters going over, and you knew exactly what they were going to do – on their way to an emergency. To be involved in that has always been a yes from me.”
Fans of Beckham and the royals rushed to comment on a video of the interview that had circulated online.
One wrote: “Much respect to the Beckhams! Think a Knighthood is long overdue.”
Another said: “Lovely man.”
The ex-England captain, 49, is in Davos alongside global leaders in his capacity as the UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador.
Last year in May, Beckham also visited King Charles’s beloved Highgrove Estate after being named one of the King’s Foundation’s ambassadors and during the interview he reminisced over some “great pictures” of the duo talking and laughing together.
Beckham also said he shares several common interests with Charles, 76, including bee-keeping and empowering young people.
Palace aides previously said the ex-football legend was approached by the King’s Foundation to be an ambassador due to his and the King’s shared interests in nature and opportunities for young people.
Beckham, who recently celebrated 20 years in his role as the UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador, has also discussed the 7 Fund during his appearance at the World Economic Forum.
He launched the fundraising initiative in collaboration with the UN children’s agency in 2015 to support schemes targeted at the welfare of at-risk children in seven different countries.
