Today marks the centenary of the Birth of Traute, Princess of Lippe, who was born on this day in 1925! The biologist who married the head of the Princely House of Lippe, Princess Traute once wore the striking Lippe Pearl and Diamond Necklace Tiara!

The delicate Pearl and Diamond Necklace with swags and pendants is of unknown provenance but appears to have been among the personal jewellery of Princess Bertha of Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld, the first wife of Leopold IV, the last Prince of Lippe. Princess Bertha wore the Necklace with an heirloom Tiara that was stolen by revolutionaries in 1918 and broken up.

By the 1960s, the Pearl and Diamond Necklace had been made into a Tiara, worn by Princess Traute for Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard’s Silver Anniversary Gala at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam in 1962.

Several years later, the then Hereditary Princess Maria wore the Pearl and Diamond Necklace Tiara to the Wedding of her cousin, Princess Alexandra of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, and Count Jefferson von Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth at Gråsten Palace in 1998.

The Pearl and Diamond Necklace Tiara was also worn by Hereditary Princess Maria to the Wedding Ball of the Prince of Prussia and Princess Sophie of Isenburg in 2011.

More recently, the Pearl and Diamond Necklace Tiara was worn by Princess Mathilde zu Lippe, the younger daughter of the Prince and Princess, for the Wedding Ball of Hereditary Prince Ludwig zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg and her cousin, Helene von Pezold, at Schloss Wertheim in Kreuzwertheim.
