King Philippe of the Belgians has attended the annual commemoration for war victims in Brussels.

The event takes place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the foot of the Congress Column to honour those who died in World War I and World War II. It also serves as a way to remember 254 Belgian soldiers who died during humanitarian and peace missions since 1945.

Members of the Belgian government, including Minister of Defence Ludivine Dedonder, attended the event.

After a parade, the King inspected the troops before laying a wreath at the foot of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He then relit the eternal flame.

His Majesty also took time to speak to veterans at the commemoration before returning home.

At the 11th hour of 11 November 1918, the Armistice Agreement between the Allies and Germany was signed, ending World War I. Since then, Belgium’s defence has marked this day to remember all those who lost their lives fighting in that war and subsequent wars.
