King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is in Singapore for a State Visit without Queen Silvia. However, he was still thinking of his wife as this important event began and shared her regrets at being unable to visit.
The Swedish king gave his customary speech at the State Banquet held in his honour as the State Visit got under way and explained Queen Silvia’s absence, saying ”Her Majesty the Queen and I were truly delighted by your generous invitation to come to Singapore. Unfortunately, Her Majesty the Queen has come down with a severe cold and is not able to attend this state visit but she sends her warmest regards.”
This is a historic State Visit, as it is the first to be made by a Swedish monarch to Singapore. King Carl Gustaf will be in Singapore from 19 to 21 November.
King Carl Gustaf attended a unique ceremony at the start of his time in Singapore, an orchid naming ceremony. High-ranking guests will often have a hybrid orchid created and named in their honour.
The visit will focus on several different themes including business ties, health care, search and rescue missions, higher education, and transportation.
The Swedish royal court announced earlier this week that, due to her illness, Queen Silvia would not be joining her husband as planned.
