Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg have supported one of the most popular athletes at the Olympics.
Ni Xia Lian is a Chinese-born Luxembourgish table tennis player who has represented the country internationally since 1991. At 61, she is one of the oldest competing athletes at the 2024 Summer Olympic games in Paris.
Ni has long been considered one of Luxembourg’s most beloved athletes. She has represented Luxembourg at the 2008, 2012, 2026, 2020, and 2024 Olympic games and was one of Luxembourg’s flag bearers for the 2024 Opening Ceremonies.
Unfortunately Ni was knocked out of her competition by the 23 year old Sun Yingsha from China. However, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess were on hand to share just how proud Luxembourg is.
The Grand Ducal couple shared an Instagram post where they congratulated Ni on everything she has achieved. They said ”Her entire career is a model of professionalism and passion, an example for all sportspeople… Xia Lian is a true ambassador of Luxembourg sport throughout the world.”
They even shared photos where Grand Duke Henri was getting a table tennis lesson from Ni.
