Prince Harry has been slated in an extraordinary broadside by American Pie singer Don McLean, who ranted that the Duke of Sussex “doesn’t get America”.
The 78-year-old King of the Trail was already annoyed with the royal’s tell-all biography, Spare, in which the Duke slammed Graceland, Elvis Presley’s Memphis mansion.
Harry called it “dark” and “claustrophobic” and could not quite believe the king of rock ‘n’ roll used to live there.
After Spare’s release, Don took to X, formerly Twitter, to tell Harry to “shut his mouth”.
Now, speaking to the Daily Mail, the singer of the 1971 hit American Pie went further, saying Prince Harry “doesn’t get America”.
He accused the Duke of comparing Graceland to Buckingham Palace, saying “that misses the point completely”.
The star added: “Here’s a fellow who has been brought up to be mannerly, but you don’t criticise America when you’re living here as our guest.”
Don also said: “He doesn’t understand that Elvis is like the poor man’s king. He came from nowhere and his recordings are among the greatest ever made.”
Prince Harry made several criticisms in Spare, including accusations against members of the Royal Family.
He and wife Meghan Markle, who left the Firm in 2020 to live in California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, have not long returned to the US after visiting Nigeria.
Many have described the trip as similar to a royal tour, even though the couple are no longer working royals.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were mobbed by excited crowds on their trip to the West African country, with Harry taking part in a special volleyball match and Meghan speaking at several events.
The Duke also delivered a poignant address on mental health during a school visit, highlighting the global stigma surrounding the issue.
