It was a busy day full of formalities as King Carl XVI Gustaf officially marked 50 years on the Swedish throne.

The day was filled with a Te Deum, a visit to the grave of a beloved grandfather, a televised speech and a gala dinner in the Royal Palace. It was during the sparkling dinner that a sweet moment took place amidst all the finery and celebration.

Crown Princess Victoria spoke at the dinner in honour of her father, saying: “During the half-century that you have been king, our country has developed, our society has undergone great changes. You have been careful to follow along while at the same time protecting the tradition. For Sweden, with the times.”

She praised his dedication to Sweden and his family, highlighting his bond with his children and nature.

Her mother, Queen Silvia, was seen wiping away tears, and her younger sister, Princess Madeleine, looked emotional but proud of the King.

Movingly, the Crown Princess said: “I am proud and grateful to follow in your footsteps. Tonight, I want to say thank you. Thank you for all you have done and for all you do. For your country. For your family. And for me.”

She then raised a toast to her father, and that’s when the heartwarming moment caught everyone’s eye.

Before the heir to the throne sat down, the King caught her eye to specifically toast to her and to toast together. It was a touching moment in a day with so much ceremony.
