Who is Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester?

Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, is the second son of the former Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Prince Henry and Princess Alice.

He is the youngest grandchild of King George V and Queen Mary.

At birth, he was fifth in the line of succession to the British throne – as of July 2023 he is 31st in line.

Richard became heir apparent to his father’s dukedom on the death of his older brother William in 1972.

At the time he was working as an architect but took on additional family obligations and royal duties on behalf of the Queen after his brother’s death.

He became Duke after the death of his father in 1974.

He married Birgitte van Deurs in July 1972 and the couple have three children.

Their firstborn Alexander Windsor arrived on  October 24, 1974, with daughter Lady Davina being born on November 19, 1977.

A second daughter – Lady Rose – was born on March 1, 1980. 

All of Richard’s children are married and have two kids each of their own, however, none of them are working royals.

Prince Richard is the first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which makes him King Charles’ first cousin once removed.

In August 1972, he was competing in the Goodyear International Air Trophy at Halfpenny Green, near Wolverhampton, with Vyrell Mitchell listed as a passenger.

Shortly after their takeoff and at a very low altitude, the Piper Cherokee banked abruptly with the wing hitting a tree and shearing off.

The out-of-control plane flipped over and crashed into an earth bank, bursting into flames.

Both Prince William and Mitchell were killed.
