Who is John Warren and how long did he work for the Queen?

John Warren has had quite the career as a racing manager, in particular working for the late Queen.

He oversaw all of her racing and breeding, taking on the role of an advisor.

He was in the role for more than 13 years and celebrated many wins next to Her Majesty.

One that stood out in particular was when the pair were pictured together when Estimate, Her Majesty’s horse, won the Ascot Gold Cup back in 2013.

John is in charge of the horses that run in Royal colours, representing the Queen for more than a decade.

In June 2022, the Queen made Warren a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, which is an award given to those who have served under the monarch in a personal way.

Now Warren is involved in the Bahraini royal circles, taking on a role advising Commissioning’s owner Isa Salman and Abdulla Al Khalifa.

How many horses did The Queen own?

The Queen owned more than 200 horses when she passed away in September 2022, but the exact number is unknown.

During her racing career, it has been said that she was able to earn £8.7m from prize money over the years.

In 2016 alone her horses earned a combined £560,000 in prize money, and in 2021 they won £584,000.

According to Sandringham’s website, Prince Philip used the prize money from his winning horses to renovate the Walled Kitchen Gardens on the Estate.

Who own The Queen’s horses now?

The registration of all of the Queen’s racehorses has been transferred to King Charles and Queen Camilla, who become co-owners.

It was reported that in 2022 King Charles earned more than £1m for selling 14 of the Queen’s racehorses.

Charles still privately owns dozens of his own thoroughbreds, some that are in training in racing yards or stabled at the Royal Stud.

It is expected that he will sell off around half of his mother’s horses over the years.

Camilla also owns racehorses with ex-Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick.
