The Danish Royal Family had their special balcony moment disrupted on Monday by an unexpected family member. King Frederik of Denmark celebrated his 57th birthday in Copenhagen with a balcony appearance on Monday at Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg.

As he stepped out with his mother, Queen Margrethe, and his wife, Queen Mary, along with three of the couple’s four children, the monarch was in for a surprise. This is because while waving to royal fans, one of the royal family’s pet dogs made their way onto the balcony.

The family were seen to find the moment highly amusing, with the King’s son Prince Vincent,14, leaning down to do a handshake with the dog.

The dog seemed unfazed by the loud noises from crowds below and instead enjoyed a quick pet before heading back inside.

The King found the moment amusing, as did the rest of his family, including his two daughters, Princess Isabella, 18, and Princess Josephine, 14.

The monarch’s eldest child, Crown Prince Christian, 19, was not on the balcony as he is currently undertaking military training.

The moment on the balcony on Monday delighted royal fans, especially those in Denmark.

One fan wrote on Instagram: “Fun birthday festivities with HRH King Frederik and his family.”

Another said: “Simply such a beautiful and fantastic family.”

A third said: “A cool family that enchants people with magic!!”

The balcony appearance is an old tradition where the regent is celebrated on his birthday with a balcony scene in connection with the big changing of the guard.
