This royal is reaching a milestone birthday but keeping the celebrations very low key

She’s second in line to the throne of Spain but this royal teenager is keeping a big birthday very low key.

Infanta Sofia of Spain, younger of the two daughters of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, turns 18 on April 29 but there are no big glitzy celebrations planned for her.

Instead, a series of photos have been released of Sofia as she reaches this milestone.

The photos show her in informal dress – jeans and a shirt – and they were shared with little fanfare on the morning she turned 18.

The already taken decision to keep the celebrations quiet is perhaps wise: Spain is still getting back on track after a major power outage hit much of the country on April 28 leaving people without access to ange of key services while transport ground to a halt and hospitals had to switch to emergency generators.

Sofia was born on April 29 2007 at the Ruber International Clinic in Madrid, the second child of Felipe VI and Letizia. She’s grown up in Madrid, going to school there before heading to Wales and UWC Atlantic College to finish her secondary education.

It’s already been confirmed that Sofia, who has the title of Infanta, won’t follow her older sister, Princess Leonor, into the military. The details of her next move, once she leaves UWC this summer, haven’t been revealed.

However, Infanta Sofia has already carried out her first solo engagements and has also shown a real passion for sport, accompanying her parents to important international football matches as well as cheering on the Spanish team at the 2024 Olympics.
