Theatre Performance at Fredensborg Palace, 1954

Crown Princess Margrethe, Princess Benedikte and Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark dressed in historic costumes and spectacular heirloom jewels as they portrayed their ancestors for Theatre Performances at Fredensborg Palace on this day in 1954, 70 years ago.

Crown Princess Margrethe played the role of ‘Mrs Preen’ in the short play ‘Shall we join the ladies?’, but introduced the performance dressed as Queen Juliane Marie, bedecked in the antique Diamond Jewels of the Løsørefideikommis.

From the Juliane Marie Theatre, Fredensborg. There are both pictures of the princesses, Princess Margrethe’s friends as well as of the theater and a dinner.

Princess Benedikte and Princess Anne-Marie did a sketch called ‘Scène Familiale’, which was set in 1806, in which Princess Benedikte portrayed the future Queen Désirée of Sweden while Princess Anne Marie portrayed the later King Oscar I.

Here you can see the small “Scène Familiale” (Image from 1806). Desirée Bernadotte, Marshal of France, shows the dress she wore at the coronation of Emperor Napoleon I in Paris to her son Oscar, later King Oscar I of Sweden-Norway. Queen Ingrid loaned Princess Benedikte a dress that had belonged to Queen Désirée, along with the historic Danish Ruby Parure, talking about it being:

a very great experience to be allowed to put those clothes and jewels on. I thought it was fantastic”
