The ultimate fairy tale princess tiara that’s now a modern royal classic

Meet the tiara that has put fairytale into princess in the 21st century.

The Swedish Royal Family has a large jewellery collection, with several pieces well over a century old and nearly every major gemstone represented. The Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara is a family favourite with two princesses making it a fairytale stand out in recent times.

The tiara features diamonds set in a lattice pattern with seven large aquamarines.

This kokoshnik-style tiara originally belonged to Crown Princess Margretha of Sweden (born Princess Margaret of Connaught). After her tragic death in 1920 from sepsis, her jewels were dispersed amongst her children.

Her eldest son, Prince Gustaf Adolf, inherited the tiara and his wife, Princess Sibylla, wore the tiara frequently, including to their wedding festivities in 1932.

Their eldest child, Princess Margaretha, inherited the aquamarine diadem upon her mother’s death in 1972 and wore it often in the early years of the reign of her brother, King Carl XVI Gustaf, who took the throne in 1973. Princess Margaretha frequently wore the tiara, including to Prince Carl Philip’s 2015 wedding.

Crown Princess Victoria wore this stunning aquamarine tiara. In 2021, she chose it for the State Dinner during the Spanish State Visit to Sweden.

However, it’s Victoria’s younger sister, Princess Madeleine, who has made this into a modern fairytale classic. She has worn it several times including to the 2015 and 2019 Nobel Prize ceremonies, as well as for an official portrait.

But it was her decision to wear this gorgeous gem with a beautiful ballgown for a tea party for ill children invited to the Royal Palace that remains its most famous outing. Madeleine came dressed as the ultimate fairytale princess to meet the youngsters who had all arrived in their prettiest party outfits. It was a magical day that made many happy memories for the children who were brought together by the charity Min Stora Dag.

This tiara also has a coordinating diamond and aquamarine brooch but this diadem is such a dazzler, few give any other gems a look when it’s doing its sparkling best.
