The second in line to the throne of the Netherlands, Princess Alexia, made an important debut in 2023.

While the coming of age of two future monarchs, Prince Christian of Denmark and Princess Leonor of Spain, made more headlines, Alexia also reached her majority and almost immediately attended a vital parliamentary event.

The princess was at Prince’s Day for the first time in an official capacity and arrived at the Dutch Parliament in The Hague with her uncle, Prince Constantijn, and her aunt, Princess Laurentien, who were both on hand to help with the almost inevitable nerves.

Once on the red carpet, Princess Alexia relaxed and acquitted herself with confidence. Her parents, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, arrived soon afterwards with her older sister and heir to the throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia.

Alexia joined the royal family and politicians to listen to the special speech read by King Willem-Alexander which sets out budget plans for the year ahead as well as being an opportunity to reflect on other issues. The king spoke of the tenth anniversary of his reign, reached in April 2023. She went on to join her family for a balcony appearance at the Noordeinde Palace.

Princess Alexia’s attendance came two weeks after she carried out her first solo engagement, christening a ship named in her honour. Her coming of age means she can now take on royal engagements. However, the princess is currently taking a gap year before attending university.

Alexia Juliana Marcela Laurentien turned 18 on June 26th 2023. Official photos marked the moment which took place as the princess completed her secondary education at UWC Atlantic College in Wales where she shared her graduation day with Princess Leonor, a fellow student.

Her father, King Willem-Alexander, made her a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Netherlands Lion and a Knight of the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau via Royal Decree to mark her 18th birthday.
