The Duchess of Rothesay’s sleek nautical outfit at Thursday’s naming ceremony for the HMS Glasgow was made all the more glamorous with a brand-new silver brooch.
The HMS Glasgow Brooch was designed by James Porter & Son Diamonds, a Glaswegian jewellery company, and commissioned by The Worshipful Companies of Merchant Taylors and Fan Makers.
“It was an absolute honour to see her wearing it,” Simon Porter, the jewellers’ fifth-generation managing director, told reporters. “Against a plain navy background, it really stood out.”
Catherine’s brooch was inspired by the crest of the HMS Glasgow, of which she is Lady Sponsor. James Porter & Son Diamonds described its design as one totally inspired by Scotland.
The thistle acts as the brooch’s frame both as a tribute to Scotland and to Catherine’s love of nature; and the patron saint of Scotland, St Kentigern, is depicted on the base underneath the HMS Glasgow’s crest. A crown at the top of the brooch symbolises heritage and honour.

“It has been a true privilege to create such a meaningful piece for our future Queen, and we hope it will be treasured for generations to come,” the company wrote on its Instagram account.
Catherine officially named the HMS Glasgow in Scotstoun on Thursday, the first of eight Type 26 anti-submarine frigates to enter service in support of the United Kingdom’s aircraft carriers and nuclear deterrents.
Catherine was named Lady Sponsor of the HMS Glasgow in June 2021 at the request of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
