The Spanish women’s football team, La Roja, won the Women’s World Cup, defeating England’s Lionesses 1-0 as Queen Letizia and Infanta Sofía watched from the stands.
After their victory, the royal women joined the team on the field to celebrate their win. Video captured Queen Letizia receiving her very own La Roja jersey—number 12 with her name underneath—and then the squad broke out into chants of “Que bote La Reina!” which translates to “Bounce Queen Letizia!”
Queen Letizia compiled and began jumping in celebration while the members of La Roja cheered her on. Infanta Sofía joined in cheering on her mother, draped in a Spanish flag. She later received her own jersey, number 10.
The Spanish royals stayed with the members of La Roja throughout their celebrations. Both gave each football player an individual hug and joined in team photos with the Women’s World Cup trophy.
Before the match began, Queen Letizia spoke to broadcasters, saying that she was proud to support La Roja, saying, “It is a joy, and it is exciting to be here today, in Sydney, to support and accompany the players and the entire coaching staff in a final that is making all of Spain vibrate.”
Her husband, King Felipe, could not attend due to government business, and Princess Leonor began her three-year military training the previous week, making her unable to attend.
Infanta Sofía told the broadcaster she couldn’t wait to “go to the locker room afterwards to congratulate them no matter what.”
After La Roja won, the Spanish Royal Family’s X account posted: “Champions!! Champions!! World Champions!! You are the best soccer players in the world. This is FOOTBALL and it is HISTORY! Thank you, @SEFutbolFem, for making all of Spain vibrate.”
