The new year is still several months away but 2025 already has a lavish royal wedding lined up – however, chances are you may not be too familiar with the princess who will be bride.

The Princely House of Liechtenstein has just announced that the only daughter of the royal in charge of this tiny country’s monarchy is about to say ‘I do’.

Princess Marie Caroline of Liechtenstein will marry Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer late next summer with royalty and high society names expected to pack the guest list.

Marie Caroline is the second child and only daughter of Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein.

Alois has been regent of his country since 2004 although his father, Prince Hans Adam II, technically remains Head of State. However, day to day power rests with Alois and it’s not insubstantial – twice in the last twenty years, voters in Liechtenstein have said yes in referendums confirming that the ruling prince can veto laws.

Those powers can never pass to Marie Caroline. Liechtenstein doesn’t allow women to take to the throne and the princess has never been included in her country’s line of succession.

However, Marie Caroline has an older brother, Joseph Wenzel, who is expected to succeed his father in time. She also has two younger brothers, Georg and Nikolaus.

Princess Marie Caroline Elisabeth Immaculata was born on May 24th 1996 in Grabs, Switzerland. She was educated at Malvern College in England and at the Parsons School of Design in Paris and New York. She now works in the fashion industry.

Her fiance, Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer, was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1990 and went to school at Harrow before completing an undergraduate degree at St. Andrews’ University and a postgraduate at Queens College, Cambridge. He works in Investment Management.

The couple announced their engagement on October 21st 2024.
