The bride wore white, the groom was in uniform and the congregation was filled with kings, queens, princes and princesses. However, the royal wedding that took place on June 13 2015 was a very modern marriage ceremony. The happy couple, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, ripped up the rule book for a celebration like no other.
Even though Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden opted for a traditional Evangelical Lutheran ceremony, many personal elements were included. And many of them were musical.
Among the songs they asked to be played at their wedding was “Fix You” by Coldplay. This unusual choice was followed by a customised version of Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella” was also played.
However, it was their exit music that really stood out.
The newlyweds chose to walk out of the Drottningholm Palace Chapel in Stockholm to a song from Sister Act.
Their pick was ‘Joyful Joyful’ and they were so happy about it, they even asked their royal guests to clap along as part of the celebrations at the end of the ceremony.
Plenty joined in with kings and queens dancing along to the music as the ceremony came to a close. Queen Margrethe of Denmark was noticeable in her decision to stay static for the song.

After a carriage ride through Stockholm, which saw the couple cheered by big crowds, Carl Philip and Sofia returned to the Royal Palace in Stockholm for their wedding reception which included another musical surprise.
Prince Carl Philip spoke eloquently about his new wife, telling her that ”you fill my life with love and happiness. With your love I will be able to overcome all challenges. Dear Sofia, I love you.”
However, Sofia also wanted to pay tribute to her love and had asked singer, Molly Sanden, to write and perform a song all about Prince Carl Philip.
It was so touching, that the groom burst into tears.
Later, another new piece of music was played as the couple enjoyed their first dance as husband and wife.
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia are celebrating their tenth anniversary back at the chapel where they wed. They will be there for the christening of their youngest child, Princess Ines, who was born in February.
And no doubt, the music will be filled with joy for a couple who ripped up the royal rule book on their wedding day.
