The Princess of Wales swaps champagne for whisky as she honours wish of Queen Elizabeth II

The Princess of Wales has officially named a brand new warship and christened it in a rather unusual way.

The Princess christened HMS Glasgow on the River Clyde in Scotland and chose the Scottish option of whisky for the ceremony rather than the more used champagne.

It was an echo of Queen Elizabeth II who launched an aircraft carrier in 2014 with whisky. The late Queen had named the Princess of Wales as Lady Sponsor of HMS Glasgow in 2021.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, travelled to the Scottish city for the official naming ceremony for HMS Glasgow. They also visited the BAE Systems’ shipyard in Glasgow during their time there.

Catherine also gave a short speech where she included the traditional blessing, “May God bless her and all who sail on her.

And as expected, Catherine chose a suitably naval-themed ensemble for the day. She wore a navy coat dress in wool crepe that features white trim detailing, along with a navy and white dome hat from favourite royal milliner Philip Treacy. (Eagle-eyed royal watchers may recognise the hat from her 2022 look for Trooping the Colour.

The look was not complete without accessories, though. Her Royal Highness wore a pair of earrings, each with a cabochon sapphire stud and drop that are surrounded by diamonds, that belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales. She also wore a highly appropriate silver thistle brooch, a nod to Scotland’s official flower.
