The Princess of Wales has shared new portraits drawn by her children as part of a larger conversation about how portraiture can help children frame and develop emotions.

Four hand drawn portraits were shared to the Kensington Palace social media accounts from Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—all of whom appear to have drawn their mother—while Catherine’s portrait is of one of her children.

“The @Earlychildhood Shaping Us Framework describes the social and emotional skills which start to develop in early childhood. These skills are key throughout our lives, shaping who we are, how we manage our thoughts and emotions, how we communicate with and relate to others, and how we explore the world around us,” the palace wrote on social media.

Catherine has, since returning to royal duties, made Shaping Us a key focus of her work. A few weeks ago, she joined schoolchildren on a visit to the National Portrait Gallery where they took a trip through a new interactive learning experience that is designed to help children learn about social and emotional skills through portraiture.

The royal added: “Drawing portraits with children can provide a moment of connection as you spend time looking at and focusing on one another, as well as being creative and – most importantly – having lots of fun together!”

At the time the Shaping Us framework was announced, Catherine said that it had been “designed to provide an accessible way of focusing on social and emotional skills” to help organisations design and deliver “interventions that raise awareness across society, and to support the development of these critically important skills for people at all stages of life.”
