THE One Show’s Alex Jones got caught up in an awkward moment with a celebrity guest while discussing the monarchy.

The One Show was plunged into an incredibly agonising stretch of confusion over the Queen after comedian Frank Skinner mistakenly corrected Alex Jones.

The 66-year-old appeared on Monday’s episode to discuss his current UK tour alongside Clare Balding and Coleen Rooney.

Presenters Jermaine Jenas and Alex were wrapping up their segment about the BBC’s 500 Words challenge for children when the West Bromwich comic leapt in to offer what he obviously thought was a helpful correction.

Unfortunately, he was wrong, and after a series of quietly panicked and rather excruciating seconds, Jermaine got caught up in Frank’s comment.

Addressing the at-home viewers, Alex said: “Some 50 finalists will go to the palace next year and might even meet Her Majesty, the Queen.

“Now the final will be also featured on a special 500 words programme with The One show.”

She finished: “We’re having a day out at the palace, aren’t we? Can’t wait. Brilliant”

Alex turned to the guests on the sofa as the broadcast cut to a wide-angle shot of the studio.

Frank interjected: “They won’t meet Her Majesty, the Queen.”

A confused-looking Jermaine responded: “Yeah, I think we got that bit slightly wrong, didn’t we? His Majesty, who they might meet, yes.”

Both men were thinking she meant to say King Charles instead as Frank nodded in approval.

Alex quickly doubled down, repeating: “Yeah – the Queen.”

The presenter was referring to Camilla and not the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022 at the age of 96.

Camilla is now officially known as ‘Queen Camilla’ or just ‘the Queen’ following her and King Charles’s joint crowning in May.

However, her role remains that of a consort who does not formally share the monarch’s powers.

In response to Alex, Frank quipped: “It’s not my business – just trying to be helpful.”

A burst of nervous laughter could be heard in the studio, including from Alex and Jermaine.

Alex responded: “We’re alright”, as Jermaine admitted: “It threw me off as well!”

In an attempt to save the show, former footballer-turned-pundit tried to swerve the show back on course with rather an inelegant segue.

He turned to Coleen and asked: “Anyway, Coleen, you’ve got four sons, right?”

Before enquiring about whether they were interested in creative writing, as per the competition announced earlier in the show.

During the show, Coleen revealed that her high-profile defamation court case against Rebekah Vardy has been resolved.

The mum-of-four, 37, admitted she has been able to be ‘present again’ with her family.

She explained: “It was so stressful, I feel like a massive cloud’s been lifted now.

“And even though I was there physically looking after the children, mentally, I just wasn’t.

“So now I just feel so grateful to be present again and to be there with the kids, both physically and mentally.”

She is now telling her side of the story in a three-part docu-series, which airs on Wednesday, October 18, on Disney Plus titled Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
