King Harald V of Norway has stated that he will never abdicate.

The King was asked about any possible plans to step aside just days after Queen Margrethe of Denmark gave up her own throne after a reign of 52 years.

With his heir at his side, King Harald, who will celebrate his 87th birthday next month, was asked whether he had thought about abdicating given the shock decision just taken by his friend and relation, Queen Margrethe.

Norway’s monarch replied ‘’no’’ before explaining why with a reference to his country’s parliament, the Storting.

His Majesty said ‘’I stand by what I have always said. I took an oath to the Storting and it lasts for life.’’

His heir, Crown Prince Haakon, was at his side and the two men laughed as the king tackled the questions about whether he would be giving up his throne in favour of his son.

It’s not the first time that King Harald has been asked if he plans to abdicate and not the first time he has said he intends to continue in his role for life.

Harald V took the throne of Norway on January 17th 1991 on the death of his father, King Olav V.
