The Duke of Edinburgh is to take on an army role held by Prince Philip for over twenty years.

Prince Edward becomes the Colonel-in-Chief of the Queen’s Royal Hussars, one of a wide range of military appointments just announced by Buckingham Palace.

The last Colonel-in-Chief was the last Duke of Edinburgh – Prince Philip held the appointment from 2002 until his death on April 9th 2021.

Before that, the Colonel-in-Chief was Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. The Queen’s Royal Hussars was formed in 1993 as an amalgamation of the Queen’s Own Hussars and the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars.

The new Duke of Edinburgh takes on the role with immediate effect.

Prince Edward has also been made Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Dragoon Guards.
