The Duchess of Edinburgh ”deeply saddened” after woman hit by police escort dies – Royal Central


The Duchess of Edinburgh has said she is deeply saddened to hear of the death of a woman who was hit by part of her escort.

Helen Holland, who was 81, suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a police motorbike rider escorting the Duchess through west London two weeks ago.

Mrs Holland died in hospital on May 24th 2023. Her family said they were ”utterly devastated” at her loss. Her son, Martin Holland, said she had suffered ”multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries”.

Mrs Holland’s family added ”Helen will be sorely missed by all that knew her and the hole she has left in our hearts will never be filled.”

Buckingham Palace issued a statement, saying ”The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to hear that Helen Holland has passed away. Her Royal Highness’s deepest condolences and sympathies go to all of Ms Holland’s family.”

It is understood that the Duchess intends to contact the family privately to express her condolences.

Helen Holland was visiting her sister in west London when she was hit by the motorcycle at a junction in Earl’s Court. The incident is being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
