It’s the drink everyone wants a piece of right now and the Princess of Wales is no exception. As she presented shamrocks to the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day, Catherine got to grip with a Guinness.

The drink is so fashionable right now, it’s hard to get your hands on a pint in some places as Instagram and TikTok accounts point out where the best of the ‘black stuff’ can be found. The Princess of Wales seemed quite happy with her half, poured with care at Wellington Barracks in Aldershot, and raised her glass in a toast.

The Princess, who is Colonel of the regiment, made sure everyone else could do the same by putting money behind the bar.

Catherine was at the barracks to carry out the favourite royal tradition of presenting shamrocks to the Irish Guards. She had to miss the ceremony in 2024 – she had just begun preventative chemotherapy after cancer was found during a major abdominal operation. The Princess told some of those she met that she had missed being able to join their St. Patrick’s celebrations then.

She was soon back on parade, inspecting the guards and being given her own sprig before handing out shamrocks.

There was also a very special member of the regiment to greet, mascot, Irish wolfhound Turlough Mor, who also joined the royal Colonel for a group photo to mark the moment.

The visit also saw the Princess present operational medals to soldiers recently returned from Iraq. And there was a chance to meet some of their families, too, with Catherine holding hands with several of the babies who were there for the celebrations.

The Princess of Wales has presented shamrocks several times and follows a long royal tradition – for many years, The Queen Mother oversaw the ceremony. And, like Catherine, she was happy to tuck into a Guinness – on St. Patrick’s Day, it’s always the drink everyone wants to try.
