The Dutch Royal Family has an impressive jewellery collection and one of the stand-out pieces is almost two centuries old and was originally known by a now very unusual name.
The Romanov Pearl and Diamond Stomacher originally belonged to Grand Duchess Catharine Pavlovna of Russia who then left the piece to her daughter, Queen Sophie of the Netherlands. Sophie wore the stomacher for a portrait in the 1840s, the first visual record.

Known as a devant-de-corsage, it is an open-faced bow set with many smaller traditional diamonds and five pink diamonds. The full setting includes diamond garlands with three suspended pearls, as well as an additional diamond bow.
Queen Emma began wearing the brooch almost immediately after she married King William III in 1879. Her daughter, Queen Wilhemina, wore the piece frequently with a number of different tiaras throughout her reign. Notably, she wore the stomacher for her last official portrait as queen.

Her daughter, Queen Juliana, rarely wore it, but the young Princess Beatrix joined the family tradition and began wearing it as heir to the throne. She wore it in a number of different settings and even wore it for her final abdication event in 2013.
Queen Maxima wore the smaller, single bow setting as Princess of Orange but began wearing the full setting in 2014 as Queen of the Netherlands.
