Sarah Ferguson shares cancer update that is ‘best news’ she could have hoped for | Royal | News

Sarah Ferguson has shared a cancer update that is the “best news” she could have hoped for.

The Duchess of York, who was diagnosed with skin cancer just after Christmas, has revealed there appears to be no spread of the cancer after facing further surgery.

Sarah received the devastating blow to her health in January, her second cancer diagnosis in the space of one year.

The 65-year-old previously shared that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

After her skin cancer diagnosis earlier this year, the Mail has now reported that Sarah has undergone further surgery to examine the area around the mole that was found to be malignant, as well as her lymph nodes.

A friend of Sarah has said that she has now learnt that these are all “free of cancer” and doctors believe that the cancer has not spread.

Whilst she will undergo 12-week check-ups, the news is said to be the “best possible outcome that she could have hoped for”.

Sarah has previously spoken out on her hope to encourage more people to undertake regular mammograms and get their moles checked out by health professionals.

The friend said: “The good news is that these have all been found to be free of cancer so it looks like there has been no spread of the disease and prognosis is good, though she’ll have regular check-ups going forward.”

They added: “It’s a huge relief for Sarah and the entire family after the most stressful time and an anxious wait for results.

“She is very lucky that the melanoma was caught early thanks to the vigilance of her dermatologist, who asked for a number of moles to be checked while she was undergoing reconstructive surgery after her mastectomy.”

Her friend added: “She’s determined to see that some good comes out of her situation and was heartened to hear there was an upsurge in people checking for details of melanoma on the NHS website after she made her diagnosis public.

“Her intention will be to get the message out about the importance of being vigilant about checking the size, shape, colour and texture of moles. If melanoma is caught early, it can be treated very efficiently.”

The Duchess of York – who lives at Royal Lodge with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew – was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer last year and underwent a mastectomy and a breast reconstruction.

She previously revealed that she almost missed her routine mammogram but was encouraged to go for it by her sister.

While she didn’t have a lump – or any obvious signs of cancer – the scan picked up an area of concern which then led to her diagnosis.
