Sailing success for King Felipe as his daughters head for new challenges – Royal Central

The Spanish Royals are enjoying their summer holidays in Palma de Mallorca, as they do every year.

After a first week full of official engagements, King Felipe hung up his business suits and exchanged them for his nautical polo and trousers, as he boarded the Aifos sailboat for the MAPFRE Sailing King’s Cup.

And this was to be a special summer: for the first time as patron, the Aifos acceded to the podium of the competition, winning the silver medal. The boat is staffed by members of the Spanish Army.

King Felipe presented 26 trophies for winning teams in all 10 categories, which included not only different types of boats, but also two “absolute champions” trophies, based on real-time competition, as well as best overall time.

To celebrate the result, King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Queen Sofía, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofía and Princess Irene went out to dinner in a nearby restaurant.

They chose Mía which belongs to chef Guillermo Cabot. It opened very recently, according to local sources, and specialises in seafood and salads.

When the time came to exit the restaurant, the royals posed for the cameras for a while, with King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s daughters showing their love and care for their grandmother, Queen Sofia, holding her by her arms and smiling.

Queen Letizia put on display her good relations with Princess Irene; Queen Sofía’s younger sister held her hand and the two women chatted happily.

This will be a summer of many changes for the Spanish Royals; on the 17th of August, Princess Leonor is expected to report for duty at Zaragoza’s Military academy to begin her three-years journey through all three branches of the Spanish Armed Forces.

At the end of the month, Infanta Sofía will also be leaving home, and make her way to Wales, where she will complete her high school years at UWC Atlantic, just like her sister did.

This will make King Felipe and Queen Letizia empty nesters, and will undoubtedly make them enjoy this time they’re spending together as a family for the holidays even more.
