It’s that time of year again! For the days leading up to the New Year, we have a series of ‘Year in Review’ articles, compiling and featuring the Royal Highlights of 2024. It’s my birthday today, and since all birthdays should have Tiaras, today’s article is a roundup of the Royal Tiaras of 2024!

- This year’s most notable Tiara appearances were at the Installation of the King of Malaysia and the Installation Banquet as well as the usual Royal Weddings and State Banquets in addition to quite a few special portraits, which is rather unusual.
- Each Year, there is a Royal Lady that has had more notable Tiara appearances than the others, and after Queen Mathilde in 2016, Queen Letizia in 2017, Queen Máxima in 2018, the tie of Empress Masako of Japan and Queen Azizah of Malaysia in 2019, numerous ties in 2020, Queen Silvia’s victory in 2022, and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in 2023, new Queen Mary of Denmark is in the lead with six appearance, followed by five for Queen Silvia of Sweden and Queen Sonja of Norway, four for Queen Camilla, Queen Raja Zarith Sofiah of Malaysia, and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg and three for Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and Queen Azizah of Pahang. Empress Masako of Japan, Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Queen Rania of Jordan had two while Queen Letizia wore only one. A special nod to Princess Afzan of Pahang, who wore five Tiaras during her Wedding Celebrations.
- There were also many Tiara debuts and important reappearances, at the splendid Royal and Noble Weddings and State Banquets, with notable appearances of Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara, the Imperial Chrysanthemum Tiara, the historic Danish Emerald Parure, the Danish Pearl Poiré Tiara, the new Danish Diamond Bandeau, and the Gandik Diraja Tiara among others.

Empress Masako wore the Meiji Scroll Tiara, Princess Aiko was wearing Princess Sayako’s Mikimoto Diamond Tiara, Crown Princess Kiko wore the Diamond Scroll Tiara and the other Japanese Princesses wore their personal Tiaras for the Japanese New Year’s Reception at the Imperial Palace.
Later that day, Queen Margrethe wore the Pearl Poiré Tiara and Khedive of Egypt Parure for the final time, Crown Princess Mary wore the Danish Ruby Parure, Princess Marie wore Princess Dagmar’s Diamond Floral Tiara, and Princess Benedikte wore the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara for the Danish New Year’s Banquet at Christian VII’s Palace, Amalienborg.
Anisha Rosnah binti Adam wore the Brunei Flower Diamond Tiara for her Wedding to Prince Mateen of Brunei, later wearing Queen Saleha’s Diamond Heart Tiara for the Wedding Banquet.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Grand Duchess Adélaïde Tiara, and Princess Alexandra wore the the Vine Leaves Tiara for the first time at the Luxembourg New Years Reception.
Tunku Azizah Aminah, the Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen of Malaysia) wore the Gandik Diraja Tiara and the Kalung Diraja Necklace for the King of Malaysia’s Farewell Banquet.
The Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen of Malaysia) again wore the Gandik Diraja Tiara and the Kalung Diraja Necklace (for the last time) for the King of Malaysia’s Departure Ceremony.
Queen Sonja wore Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore the Norwegian Amethyst Tiara and Parure, and Princess Astrid wore the Gold Bandeau Tiara, for the Tanzanian State Visit to Norway.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara, and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Chaumet Emerald Tiara for the first time during the Czech State Visit to Luxembourg.
Queen Zara Salim of Perak was in her Perak Diamond Tiara for the Opening of the 2nd year of the 15th Perak State Legislative Assembly.
Queen Raja Zarith Sofiah wore a Diamond Tiara for the King’s first Opening of Parliament.
Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore the Selangor Diamond Fringe Tiara for the Opening of the Selangor State Assembly.
Grand Duchess Maria and Princess Rebecca Victoria Romanoff wore Tiaras in a series of new Official Portraits.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara for a Portrait released on her Birthday.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Belgian Scroll Tiara with the Aquamarine Parure while Queen Mathilde wore the Nine Provinces Tiara, for the Luxembourg State Visit to Belgium.
Queen Máxima wore the full Stuart Tiara, Queen Letizia wore Queen Maria Cristina’s Loop Tiara, Princess of Orange wore the Ruby Peacock Tiara, Princess Beatrix wore the Dutch Diamond Bandeau, and Princess Margriet wore the Laurel Wreath Tiara for the Spanish State Visit to The Netherlands.
Queen Letizia did wear a Tiara, probably the Spanish Fleur-de-Lys Tiara, but it was removed by Annie Leibovitz and only a portrait wearing Queen Victoria Eugenie’s Diamond Earrings and the Diamond Rivière from the Joyas de Pasar, was released by Annie Leibovitz for a series of portraits commissioned by the Bank of Spain.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore her Diamond Daisy Bandeau and the Norwegian Amethyst Tiara for Official Portraits released this year but taken earlier.
Queen Silvia wore Queen Sofia’s Nine Prong Tiara, Crown Princess Victoria wore Princess Lilian’s Laurel Wreath Tiara, Princess Sofia wore a new version of her Wedding Tiara, and Princess Christina wore the Connaught Diamond Tiara for the Finnish State Visit to Sweden.
Queen Mary wore the historic Danish Emerald Parure for the first time in the first Official Portraits of King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark.
